Fringe can work on many fabrics, but the fabric must support the anchor stitches that hold the long satin columns in place.

Good beginner choices

• Medium-weight cotton: stable and easy to hoop.
• Sweatshirt fleece: popular for large fringe animals and florals; use adequate cutaway support.
• Stable towels: use a topping when the pile could hide stitches.
• Felt: excellent for practice and small projects.
• Marine or upholstery vinyl: useful for in-the-hoop key fobs when the design specifically calls for a non-fraying material.

Knits and T-shirts

Lightweight knits can stretch or ripple under dense anchor stitches. Use a suitable cutaway stabilizer, hoop without stretching, and test the design on similar fabric. A sweatshirt is usually more forgiving than a thin T-shirt for a first fringe garment.

Avoid unsupported or fragile fabric

Very sheer, loosely woven, heavily elastic, or heat-sensitive fabrics may distort. Do not assume a design digitized for a sweatshirt will behave the same way on a thin performance shirt.

Follow project-specific instructions
