The most important rule is simple: cut only the bobbin thread beneath the designated long satin-stitch fringe areas. Do not cut the top thread from the front, and do not cut ordinary outlines, fills, or anchor stitches.

How to identify the fringe row

On the front, the fringe area looks like unusually long, loose satin stitches. On the back, those stitches form a narrow satin column held by bobbin thread. Use the design's color sheet and tutorial to confirm the correct color and area.

Step by step

1. Finish the design unless its specific instructions tell you to stop earlier.
2. Remove the hoop from the machine. Keep the project hooped if another construction step remains.
3. Turn the hoop over and locate the back of the designated fringe satin column.
4. With small, sharp curved embroidery scissors, lift and snip the bobbin thread in that column. Work a little at a time.
5. Return to the front and gently pull or fluff the released top-thread loops.
6. Repeat only for the other marked fringe areas.

Looped fringe versus open ends

Removing the bobbin thread while keeping the long top stitches intact produces loops. Accidentally cutting through the top thread can create open ends. Both may look decorative, but looped fringe is the intended result when the tutorial shows loops.
