The part I kept adjusting
The longest part to get right on this lion was the balance between the patterned sections and the outline. I wanted the fabric to show through clearly, because that is where the patchwork effect comes from, but I also needed the lion to read as a lion at a glance. On a small animal like this, a line that is slightly too heavy can make the whole shape feel crowded. A line that is too light can let the face disappear.
I spent the most time on the edges around the body and head. Those are the places that decide whether the patterned inside looks clean or messy once it is stitched on real fabric. This design is meant to stay light, so I did not want to fill in big areas with dense stitching. The fabric does a lot of the work here. That is the point.
Because the design comes in sizes from 4 inches up to 6.5 inches, I had to make sure that same look held together across the whole set. A cute small lion for a baby shirt needs different control than a larger one for a blanket or bag panel, especially when the fabric underneath is part of the finished look. If you like patchwork style designs but do not want the extra bulk of a heavy fill, this one keeps that airy feel.

Also the jump stitches are very small. No waste of thread. I haven’t cleaned up stitches in photo yet. 2.”
