Getting the fur to stay soft and stay put

This Yorkie face had to do two jobs at once. I wanted the fur to lift and fluff after stitching, but I also needed it to stay anchored well enough for regular washing. That balance is the whole design. I reworked the satin areas so they would sit loose enough to become fringe, then built in a holding seam underneath so the fluffy parts would not pull free once the design was finished and used.

Yorkie faces are small, and that matters here. A little change in stitch path can make the face look tidy instead of scruffy, or scruffy instead of soft. I redrew parts of the head so the fringe fell around the face in a way that still reads clearly as a Yorkshire Terrier once it is fluffed.

The stitching itself is simple. You embroider the design normally, then turn the hoop over, find the reverse side, and cut the bobbin thread along the large satin stitches. Turn it back over and fluff the fringe around. That is why I kept this one beginner friendly even though the finished texture looks unusual.

I made this in four sizes, from 3.5 inches up to 5 inches, so you can pick a smaller dog face or give the fur a little more room. Buyers have used it for gifts and teaching, and the stitch out itself has been called cute, easy, and beautiful.
