Getting the fringe to stay put
This set looks playful in the finished stitchout, but the hard part was keeping that playful fringe under control. I had to test the loose satin areas so they would open up into soft fluff after cutting the bobbin thread, while still staying anchored where they needed to stay. That is why I added a special seam under the fringe. It holds the fluff in place through washing, which matters on things like towels, shirts, and gift projects that will actually be used.
The small sizes made this more demanding than a larger fringed design. A two inch chicken does not give me much room to fake softness. I had to redraw with that in mind.
I also wanted the set to work in two different ways without changing the technique. You get single chickens for small spots, and you get four chickens in a row for a longer layout on a towel or similar project. The stitching steps stay simple. Stitch the design, turn the hoop over, cut the bobbin thread along the loose satin stitches, then turn it back and fluff the fringe. I include a PDF with the directions, and there is a short video tutorial linked for the same fringe method.

I had some initial problems with stitching this, but once I've chosen the correct needle, fabric and stitching speed, it was a smooth process with a great result! Used it on a dish towel, as a gift for someone who has chickens.
