felt first

Built for a bow that keeps its shape

I started with the finished piece in mind: a small felt bow that could sit on a gift, hang as an ornament, or become a kids accessory without looking flat. Felt is a good match for that kind of project because it gives the bow body, and this design uses that firmness to hold the star shape. The result is decorative but still simple to stitch, since the project is made in the hoop instead of pieced together after embroidery.

The 3D part matters here. Those pointed loops give the bow its Christmas look, and the dimensional finish helps it read clearly even at the smaller sizes.

I included this design for 4x4, 5x7, and 6x10 hoops, with finished sizes that land at about 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 inches, so you can pick a bow size that suits an ornament, hair piece, or package topper. The download also comes with a PDF for the steps and JPG thread color charts, which makes it easier to sort out the stitch order before you start. This is a digital embroidery file, so you do need an embroidery machine to use it.

“I found out there are issues when using DST files. However, I was walk-through the process and they stitched up beautifully. The Bose looked gorgeous on top of the white Christmas gifts.”

project questions answered
What needle size and thread weight should I use?

I use regular 40wt embroidery thread, preferably polyester. Needle choice depends on the fabric, and 11/75 is usually a good place to start.

I have a 4x4 machine with repositioning hoops. Will this design work for that?

This set includes a 4x4 size, along with 5x7 and 6x10. If your machine can stitch standard 4x4 files, that size is included for this design.
