Getting the split seam to sit right
This butterfly took extra testing because the pretty part is also the part that can shift. A split seam cutout has to land cleanly on a shirt or sweatshirt, and the side bow has to look placed on purpose instead of pulled to one side by the knit. I kept working on the shape until the butterfly still read clearly, even with that opening and bow detail built into it.
I also tested it with HTV glitter vinyl as the applique fabric, because that changes how the edges look and hold. Vinyl can be crisp and bright, but it needs a clean placement and a firm press or iron so it stays where you want it before stitching continues. That mattered here.
The finished set gives you six heights, from 4 inches up to 7 inches, so you can stitch the same idea on smaller kids shirts or go bigger on a sweatshirt front. If you like a girly shirt design that feels a little different from a plain applique fill, this one is built around that side bow effect from the start, not added as an afterthought.

Yes. I include the design files and thread charts, and I also have a video tutorial that shows how to make the side bow on a t-shirt or sweatshirt. There is also a separate video showing the HTV glitter vinyl technique I used, which follows the same basic applique method.

Hoop your shirt or sweatshirt first, stitch the placement marks, then pause the machine and place your applique fabric or HTV over that area before continuing. If you use HTV glitter vinyl like I did, press or iron it down first so it stays in place while you stitch.
