The fringe took the longest
The part that took me the longest on this little tree was not the lace shape. It was the fringe. On a piece that finishes at about 2 inches, the fluffy edge has to open up enough to look soft, but it also has to stay attached after you rinse away the stabilizer. I combined freestanding lace with fringe here, and that balance mattered more than anything else.
I stitch this kind of design on non-woven water-soluble stabilizer only, with no fabric in the hoop. After stitching, you turn the hoop over, cut the bobbin thread along the large satin stitches, then turn it back and fluff the fringe around. That step is simple, but the stitch path has to support it.
I like this design because it gives you a small Christmas project that feels finished without extra assembly in the hoop. You can make it as earrings or use it as a charm, and the tree shape reads clearly even at this small size. It fits a 4x4 hoop, so it works well for home embroiderers who want a quick seasonal stitch.
