test and redraw

What I had to test before this duck felt right

This duck looks playful, but fringe can turn messy fast if the base shape is not doing its job first. I had to redraw and test the body so the fluff stayed rounded instead of getting thin spots around the curve, and I had to keep the sunglasses clear enough that they did not disappear into all that texture. Small changes matter here.

The project also had to work in two forms, not one. I included an eyelet and a snap tab, so the stitch path had to make sense for both versions while keeping the finished duck around 3.5 inches. That meant checking how the shape sat inside a 4x4 hoop for the eyelet, then testing again for the snap tab in 5x5 and 5x7 hoops so the finished piece still looked balanced and easy to use on a bag or keys.

Fringe is the part that makes this design fun, but it is also the part that teaches you something while you stitch it. One buyer told me this was her first fringed design and she missed a few bobbin thread cuts because the photo instructions are from another project with the same method. Another stitched it on marine vinyl and got a clean result. Those are the kinds of tests I pay attention to, because a cute project still has to stitch cleanly on a real machine.

“I made this duck and it came out very nice. The only problem was that the instructions were on a different design so I didn't know where to cut the bobbin thread and missed a few. This was the first time I did a fringed design, so now I know,”

Stitches out perfectly. I did it on marine vinyl. I expected perfection from this seller and she delivered just that! Never had a bad one from this store!

Both duck versions are included in this set. You get 2 designs: the eyelet and the snap tab.

What stabilizer do you recommend using?

I recommend medium-weight tear-away stabilizer for this project. Depending on the material you choose, an iron-on stabilizer may also work well.
