The little faces took time
The part that would not settle quickly was the faces inside the frames. A pumpkin grin can go crooked fast. A ghost can lose that soft, sweet look with one small line too many. And a black cat needs enough shape to read clearly without turning heavy. I kept looking at the balance between spooky and cute, because this trio only works if all three portraits feel like they belong together.
The frames mattered too. They give the set its portrait look.
I wanted each character to feel clear at every included width, from 5 inches up to 12 inches. That meant keeping the applique shapes readable and the stitched details simple enough to hold their expression. The pumpkin, ghost, and cat each have a different silhouette, so getting them to sit evenly as a trio took the longest. Once that clicked, the whole set felt calm and finished.
