A spooky bow without tiny fussy steps
Sometimes a Halloween bow looks cute on screen, then turns into a fiddly little project at the machine. I built this one to keep the shape simple and let the spider do the fun part. The bow itself is an easy in the hoop felt project, and the spider gets its fuzzy look from loose satin stitches that are opened from the back after stitching. That gives you soft fringe without adding extra materials or hand tying anything.
It is a nice answer for small seasonal makes. You can turn one stitch-out into a hairpin, a brooch, a package tie-on, or a quick party accessory without changing the basic project.
The finished bow stays small enough for kids' accessories, but I still included three design sizes so you can choose the look you want. The 4 inch file makes a bow about 2 inches finished, the 5 inch file finishes around 2.5 inches, and the 5.5 inch file finishes around 3 inches. If you have not made fringed embroidery before, the steps are straightforward: stitch the design, turn the hoop over, cut the bobbin threads along the larger satin areas, then turn it back and fluff the spider fringe.
“I would have loved to give a 5 star rating, but the spider body is so dense that my machine said “nope”! I first tried making this in felt, then I changed needles and used faux leather…everything stitches out great until the body. I ended up with loose threads both times. Thankfully my granddaughter”
I have only tried the smallest one. I used felt. I can get it to work but it was a struggle. For me, the felt is just too thick. I imagine it would work better in the larger sizes if someone has the machine to do that.
