fringe took time

The edge had to fluff up right

The part that took me the longest was the fringe around this little wreath. On a piece this small, the edge can turn into a stiff ring if the satin is too heavy, or it can look thin if the stitching does not give you enough to cut and fluff. I kept working at that balance because the whole point of this design is that soft fuzzy outline. It is only about 1.6 inches finished, so every tiny change shows.

I combined freestanding lace with fringe in one in-the-hoop design, and that meant the order of the stitching mattered as much as the shape itself. After the design finishes, you turn the hoop over, cut the bobbin thread along the large satin stitches, then turn it back and fluff the fringe around the wreath. That step is simple, but only if the stitches were built for it from the start.

I made this for water-soluble stabilizer only, because freestanding lace needs that clean wash-away base to hold the shape while it stitches. I like a non-woven wash-away stabilizer that feels more like fabric than film. Once you rinse the stabilizer away and let the wreath dry completely, the lace center stays crisp and the outside edge gets that soft holiday look that makes these earrings feel playful instead of flat.
