I think of this one on the front of a sweatshirt, near the pocket on a hoodie, or tucked onto a tote where a plain patch of fabric needs a little life. The finished look is soft and fuzzy instead of flat, so even a simple happy face has more presence once it is stitched. It reads clearly from across the room. Up close, the fringe gives it that brushed chenille look people want to touch.
The design is small on purpose, with four sizes at 2, 2.5, 3, and 6 inches. That gives you a tiny accent size and a larger option for a more noticeable chest placement.
To make the fringe, I use loose satin stitches that get opened from the back after stitching. You cut the bobbin thread along those larger satin areas, then turn the hoop over again and fluff the fringe around the shape. This part worries some stitchers the first time. It holds. I built in a tack seam underneath, so the fringe stays in place through washing and normal use.
This is an in-the-hoop design, and it is a good fit for projects that need texture without taking over the whole item. A smiley this size works well on clothes, bags, and even paper crafts if that is part of how you stitch. One buyer used it on cards, which makes sense because the shape is simple and the fuzzy edge changes the feel of the finished piece without adding a lot of bulk.

I managed to download the file and put onto my embroidery machine with no problem. The machine embroidered the smiley face ( uses a large amount of thread) but maybe because I am not that experienced I found the instructions very confusing how to get the frayed effect as all the thread around the ed
