fringe and lace

A ghost pair with more texture

A lot of Halloween earrings lean hard into one look. They are either flat freestanding lace, or they use fringe as the whole shape. I made these little ghosts with both techniques together, so you get a clean lace structure first and then that fluffy edge around the ghost. The shape stays readable. The finish still feels soft and playful.

That mix is the whole point here. The lace gives the ghost its outline and small details, and the fringe changes the surface so the pair does not look stiff once it is rinsed and dry.

These stitch in a 4x4 hoop and finish at about 1.9 and 2.2 inches, which puts them in a nice earring range without disappearing. I set them up as freestanding lace, so you hoop only non-woven water-soluble stabilizer and stitch the design right on it. After stitching, you turn the hoop over, cut the bobbin thread along the large satin stitches on the back, then turn it back and fluff the fringe. That one step is what gives these ghosts their airy edge.

If you have stitched lace before but have not tried fringe, this is a clear way to try both in one small project. I recommend a fabric-like wash-away stabilizer instead of a film because it supports the stitching better while the lace builds. Once you trim the excess stabilizer, rinse the rest away, and let the earrings dry completely, the ghosts keep their shape while the fringe opens up around them.
