The part I kept adjusting
The longest part was getting the inside pattern to feel light without turning spotty. This design depends on that balance, because the fabric is meant to show through the patterned sections while the butterfly still reads clearly as a butterfly from across the room. I kept watching the edge where the open areas meet the outline. Too heavy, and it lost that airy summer look. Too loose, and the shape started to drift.
The outline mattered most.
I wanted the butterfly to look delicate, but I also needed the edge to hold the whole design together across all the included sizes from 4 inches to 8 inches. That took more testing than the center pattern. A thin outline can be pretty in one size and weak in another, so I paid close attention to how the shape stayed readable as it grew. The finished design has that patchwork look I was after, with the background fabric doing part of the visual work.
