My machine says the file is damaged, unknown, or there's nothing on the USB stick

Short answer: Most of the time the machine can't see the file because it's still inside a ZIP, it's tucked in a sub-folder, or it's the wrong format for your machine. Download the single machine file from your Library and copy it to the top level of a plain USB stick.

If it still won't open, check the design size against your hoop, then the file name.

The usual way: a USB stick

  1. Download the file for your machine. In your Library, choose your format (for example PES) and click the pink download button on the size you want. You get one file, such as Heart.pes. See I can't download my purchase, or I got the wrong file type.

  1. Use a simple USB stick. A small, older stick formatted as FAT32 works with the most machines. Many machines don't read large or exFAT/NTFS sticks.
  2. Copy the file onto the stick itself, not into a folder on it, unless your manual names a folder.
  3. Eject the stick safely on your computer before you pull it out.
  4. Put it in the machine and open the USB or memory screen. Your design is listed there.

Other ways in

  • Wireless apps: some newer machines receive designs from the brand's app or Wi-Fi software (for example Brother's Artspira app on supported models). Each brand works differently, so follow your machine's guide. Use the machine file you downloaded, not the ZIP.
  • Cable or software: some machines connect to a computer with a cable and their own transfer program. The file is the same one you'd put on a USB stick.

"There's nothing there" or "damaged / unknown file"

Go down the list. Most people find the cause in the first three.

  1. It's still a ZIP. Machines can't open ZIP files. Unzip it first, or download the single file from your Library (designs come without a ZIP). Fonts come as a ZIP, so unzip those on your computer and copy the letter files.
  2. It's in a sub-folder. A complete package has folders for each size and format. Many machines only look at the top level of the stick, or show folders but not the files inside them. Copy the single file to the top.
  3. Wrong format. A Brother can't open a .jef, and a Janome can't open a .pes. Check the ending of the file name. See Which embroidery format does my machine use?
  4. The design is bigger than your hoop or sewing field. Many machines refuse or hide designs that don't fit, and some say "cannot use this data" or show nothing. Pick a smaller size. Each size row in your Library shows the real width × height.
  5. Long or unusual file name. Some machines can't show names that are very long or have accents, emoji or symbols. Rename it to something short like heart1.pes, and keep the ending.
  6. Too many files on the stick. Some machines stop listing after a certain number. Use a stick with only the designs you're stitching now.
  7. The stick itself. Try another stick, or reformat it as FAT32 (this erases it, so copy anything you need first).
  8. The file didn't finish copying. If you pulled the stick out early, copy it again and eject properly.

Questions people ask

I'm trying to get it transferred to the sewing machine and there is nothing there.

Is the file still in a ZIP, or in a folder on the stick? Copy the single machine file (like heart.pes) to the top level of the USB stick.

My machine says it is a damaged or unknown file.

Check three things: the format matches your machine, the file is unzipped, and the design fits your hoop. Then try a short file name.

What USB stick should I use?

A small, plain stick formatted as FAT32. Your manual may list a maximum size.

Can I send it with an app instead?

On machines that support it, yes, with the brand's own app or software. Use the machine file, not the ZIP.

Can I put the whole package on the stick?

You can, but your machine may not look inside its folders. Copying only the files you'll stitch is quicker and safer.

The font letters don't show up.

Unzip the font package on your computer first, then copy the letters (or the size folder your manual allows) to the stick.
