Artapli Studio Help

Will this look good on my baby blanket or shirt? See it on your item before you stitch

Short answer: take a photo of your item, open Mockup in Artapli Studio, add the photo and calibrate it with one real measurement. Then place the design you own in the size you plan to stitch. It appears at its real size on your item, so you can judge size and position before you hoop anything.

Before you start

Lay the item flat and take the photo straight from above, in good light. Put a ruler or tape measure in the photo, or measure something in it you can check later, such as the width of the collar, a pocket or the blanket edge. The photo stays in your browser; the footer says Owned catalog · photo stays in this browser.

Steps

1. Open Mockup

Go to Mockup in the Studio menu (studio.artapli.com/library/mockup/). Or, in your Library, click the pink Download button on a design's card to open its details, and choose Preview on item (its tile says Open in Mockup). The panel shows a QR code and a Preview on item button; when the design is ready for Mockup, an Open in Mockup button appears there too.

2. Add the photo of your item

Press Choose photo and pick the photo (JPG, PNG or WebP).

3. Calibrate the photo with a real measurement

Press Calibrate photo. A ruler appears on the photo. Drag and stretch it over something whose length you know, for example 10 cm on the tape measure, or the collar width you measured. Type that length in the number box under the ruler, choose cm or in, and press Apply.

The status line now reads Real scale set from …. Until you do this, it says Real scale not set — calibrate the photo before judging physical fit, and sizes on the photo are only a rough guide.

4. Place your design in the size you will stitch

In Choose a design, search for the design you own. Pick the size in its size list; these are the real included sizes of your files. Then press Add to canvas.

Choose a design: the search, the size list on the design card (3.8 × 3.4 in) and Add to canvas

The design appears on the board and in Layers. Drag it into place on your item. After calibration it is shown at its real size. You can fine-tune it only a little (about ±10%) on purpose: the preview should match a size you can really stitch.

To compare sizes, add the same design again in another size and look at both. Hide one with the eye in Layers.

5. Add notes and colors if you are planning with someone

The Tools panel adds text notes, arrows, lines and shapes in the colors you choose. This is useful when you send the picture to a customer or a friend. Purchased designs are shown in their own thread colors. If you use one of our embroidery fonts in Mockup, you can change its thread colors there.

6. Save the picture

Open Save & Download and choose Download PNG. If you do not see that menu, use the Export PNG button in the toolbar. Tick Transparent background if you want only the design and notes without the board. You can also Save to My Mockups and come back later.

If something looks wrong

  • The design looks far too big or too small on my photo: the photo is not calibrated, or it was calibrated on a wrong length. Press Calibrate photo again; designs already on the board are rescaled.
  • "Enter a real length greater than zero": type the measured length as a number, for example 10 or 4.
  • Calibrate photo is greyed out: add a photo first with Choose photo.
  • The photo was taken at an angle: parts further from the camera look smaller. Retake it straight from above. Calibrate close to where the design will go.
  • I can't find my design in Mockup: clear the search and choose All. Mockup shows designs you own that have a ready preview; a design in your Library may not be in Mockup yet.
  • I need it at true size on paper: Mockup's print (Print mockup under Save & Download) fits the whole picture to the page, so it is not true size. For a paper template, use Print 100% scale in your Library (see Will this design fit my hoop?).

Questions people ask

Will this design look good on my baby blanket / shirt?

Take a photo of the item, add it in Mockup, calibrate it with one real measurement, and place the design in the size you plan to stitch. You see it at real size on your own item.

Why do I need to calibrate the photo?

A photo has no size of its own. Calibrating tells Mockup how many centimeters or inches one part of the photo is, so the design is drawn at its real size.

What should I measure?

Anything flat and close to where the design will go: a ruler lying on the item, the collar width, a pocket. Measure it, drag the ruler over it in Calibrate photo, type the length and press Apply.

Can I make the design bigger in Mockup?

Only a little (about ±10%). To see a really different size, add the design again in another included size.

Is my photo uploaded somewhere?

The footer says Owned catalog · photo stays in this browser. Saving to My Mockups keeps the project in your Studio account.

Can I change the thread colors of a design?

Purchased designs show their own thread colors. Embroidery fonts used in Mockup can be recolored. Notes and shapes can use any color.

How do I share the result?

Use Save & Download → Download PNG (or Export PNG in the toolbar) and send the picture.
