Artapli Studio Help

"Do I have to put the letters together myself?" — type a name and get one file

Short answer: no extra software needed. Open the Editor in Artapli Studio, type the name, pick a letter size that fits your hoop, and press Download. You get one machine file with the whole name, letters already spaced and joined in the right order.

Your font arrives as one stitch file per letter, per size. That is normal for machine-embroidery fonts. It is not a keyboard font, so you can't type with it in Word or on your machine screen. The Editor does the typing part for you.

Before you start

  • Your own font: sign in to Artapli Studio with the account you bought with. Your fonts show up under Add Design on the left and in recently bought. In the Library you can also press Create in Lettering in a font's details, or the editing button on its card (its tooltip says Open in Editing).
  • Bought on Etsy? Link your order first, and the font will appear the same way. See Use your Etsy order in Artapli Studio.
  • Just want to try it? The empty canvas shows six free fonts under Pick a free font and start typing. Everything below works with them too.

Steps

  1. Pick the font. Click one of your fonts (or a free one). Its alphabet appears in the strip at the top.
  1. Type the name in the box under the toolbar (it says Type any name here). The letters land on the hoop as you type. The line above the hoop shows letters, threads and size, the total width × height.

  1. Choose your hoop. Open the hoop list at the top left and pick yours, for example 4×4" or 5×7". The grid on the canvas is now your real hoop. Use in / cm next to it to switch units.

  1. Choose the letter size. The size dropdown sits right next to the name box (it shows a size like 1.1 in). The size is the letter height. Pick a bigger or smaller size and watch size above the hoop. The whole name has to stay inside the hoop lines.

  1. Curve it, if you want to. Open Transform on the tool rail beside the canvas. Pick Arc or Smile for a quick curve. Straight puts the name back on a straight line. The same menu also has Italic and envelope shapes such as Half arc, Arc up, Barrel and Pennant.

For your own curve, choose Text on a line and then draw a line across the hoop: press and drag. The letters follow it. Drag a point to reshape the line, or click the line to add a point. The small panel at the bottom aligns the text to the start, centre or end, flips it to the other side and changes spacing. Press done when it looks right.

  1. Check the thread colours. The Threads panel on the right lists every colour stop in stitch order. Click a row to open Recolor Thread Step and pick a thread colour. The colours come from the Brother thread chart, and you can search by code or name. unite joins neighbouring stops that use the same colour, and sort orders them. (Bent text, such as an arc, keeps the original colour order, so sort works on straight text only.)

  1. Name it and download. Type a file name in Name your design, check the format next to it (PES, DST, JEF, VP3, EXP, HUS or XXX) and press Download. You get one file and a Design Exported! window with a preview.

  1. Stitch it. Copy the file to your machine the way you normally do (USB stick, cable or app). Check your machine's manual if you're not sure which format it reads. Before stitching on the real item, a test stitch-out on scrap fabric is always worth it.

Before you download you can also press Simulate stitching to watch the order the machine will sew in. Print gives you the design at real size, or the colour steps to keep beside the machine.

If something looks wrong

  • The name is wider than my hoop. Pick a smaller letter size, or a bigger hoop, or use the turn-hoop button next to the hoop list. Long names often fit better on an Arc or on two lines (press Enter in the name box for a second line).
  • I can't find my font. Make sure you are signed in with the account you bought with. Press the ↻ next to Add Design to sync your purchases. Etsy buyers: link the order first (08).
  • The free fonts stop at 1.6 in. That is their largest size. Your purchased font has its own list of sizes.
  • A window asks me to subscribe after my first download. It can show up when you use a free font without signing in. Not now — continue without subscribing carries on to your file.
  • My machine says the file is wrong. Download again in your machine's format. Check that the design fits the hoop you chose in the machine too.
  • Something else isn't working. Use Report a problem at the top of the Studio. It goes straight to us.

Questions people ask

Does it work by just typing a new name, or do I have to put the letters together by hand?

Just type it. In the Artapli Studio Editor you type the name, and the letters are placed and spaced for you. Download gives you one file with the whole name.

Will the letters connect without extra software?

Yes. You don't need embroidery software. The Editor builds the name and saves one machine file (PES, DST, JEF, VP3, EXP, HUS or XXX).

My download is single letters. Is something missing?

No. A font comes as one file per letter, per size. That's how machine-embroidery fonts are sold. Use the Editor to turn them into a name. If you'd rather work in your own software, you can combine the letters there too.

I can't change the size of the letters.

Use the size dropdown right next to the name box. Each size is a letter height. Watch size above the hoop change. The free fonts stop at 1.6 in.

How do I know it fits my hoop?

Pick your hoop in the hoop list at the top left. The canvas becomes that hoop, and the whole name must stay inside its lines.

Can I curve the name?

Yes. Transform → Arc or Smile gives a quick curve. Transform → Text on a line lets you draw any curve and the letters follow it.

Where is the font I bought?

Sign in with the account you bought with. It shows under Add Design and recently bought, or press Open in Editing on the font in your Library. Etsy buyers: link your order first (08).

Can I try it before buying?

Yes. Six free fonts sit on the empty canvas under Pick a free font and start typing.
