"I only got BX files. Where are my PES letters?" — BX, single letters and TTF explained

Short answer: many Artapli fonts come in two kinds of package. One holds the machine letters (PES, DST, JEF and other formats, one file per letter per size). The other is a BX font for Embrilliance. Use BX if you letter in Embrilliance. Use the single letters in Artapli's free Editor or in your own embroidery software.

A TTF "computer font" is a different thing. It types on a computer screen but it has no stitches, so a machine can't sew it.

Which one is for you?

You have… Use… How
Embrilliance (Essentials, Express and other versions that can use BX fonts) the BX package Install the BX font once, then type in Embrilliance like a keyboard font.
No embroidery software, or software without BX the machine-format package (PES, DST, JEF…) Type the name in the Artapli Studio Editor and download one file. See type a name.
Other embroidery software (Hatch, Brother, Janome and others) the machine-format package Open or merge the single letter files and line them up in your software.
Only a computer / Cricut / sign program — A TTF won't stitch. Embroidery fonts must be digitised for a machine.

Find both packages

  1. Open My Library in Artapli Studio and find your font. Typing its name in Search designs, fonts, formats… helps. All BX fonts are also gathered in one place: click Collections, then Fonts & Monograms → BX Fonts.

  1. Click the pink Download button on the font's card to see its downloads. A font downloads as numbered packages (ZIP files). Each row says what's inside, such as the sizes and formats: PES, DST, JEF…, or BX font for Embrilliance.

Using the BX font in Embrilliance

  • A BX file is a font for Embrilliance. You install it once, and Embrilliance lists it with its other fonts. After that you type the text there, the same way you type with a keyboard font.
  • The usual way to install is to drag the .BX file into the open Embrilliance window. The exact steps can differ between versions, so check Embrilliance's own help for yours.
  • Then type your name in Embrilliance and save it in your machine's format.

Using the single letters (no BX needed)

  • Every letter is its own stitch file, in every size. That's normal for machine fonts. Nothing is missing.
  • The quickest way to join them: open the font in the Artapli Studio Editor (press Create in Lettering in the font's details, or the editing button on its card, whose tooltip says Open in Editing), type the name, pick the size and hoop, and press Download. It's free with your font.

If something looks wrong

  • "The listing said PES, but I only got BX." Look for the other package. In the Library, the font's download list (pink Download on its card) shows every package. On Etsy, check all the files in the download. If a format is really missing, use Report a problem in Studio or message us with your order number and we'll sort it out.
  • "I got PES, but I wanted BX." Not every font has a BX version. Look under BX Fonts in the Library, or ask us.
  • "Can I get it as a TTF?" Our fonts are stitch files made for machines. A TTF has no stitches and won't sew. If you want to type on a computer, use the BX font in Embrilliance or the Artapli Editor.
  • "Embrilliance doesn't show my font." Make sure you installed the .BX file and not the ZIP. Then check Embrilliance's help on installing BX fonts for your version.

Questions people ask

What is a BX file?

A font file for Embrilliance embroidery software. Once it's installed, you type with it in Embrilliance like a keyboard font.

The description said PES, but I only got BX. Did I get the wrong font?

Most likely the PES letters are in a second package. In your Artapli Library, click the pink Download button on the font's card to see every package. If one is really missing, use Report a problem or message us with your order number.

Do I need Embrilliance?

No. The PES/DST/JEF letters work without it. Type the name in the free Artapli Studio Editor and download one file, or combine the letters in your own software.

Can I use BX and PES together?

They are the same font in two forms. Pick the one that suits your software.

Can you send the font as a TTF?

A TTF is a computer font with no stitches, so a machine can't sew it. Our fonts are stitch files, ready for your machine.

Why is every letter a separate file?

That's how machine-embroidery fonts work: one stitch file per letter, per size. The Artapli Editor or Embrilliance (with BX) puts them together into a name.
