How will this design look on my shirt? Try it on with your phone camera

Short answer: on any design or font page in our shop, find the Try on Your Item box. Scan its QR code with your phone, or tap the button if you're already on your phone. Tap Start Camera and point the phone at your shirt, bag or towel. The design appears on top of your item, and you can move it, turn it, recolor it and, for fonts, type your own word.

This preview is for the look and the placement. It doesn't show the exact size, because a phone camera doesn't know how far away your item is. To check the real size, use Mockup with a photo of your item or print the design at true size.

Steps

1. Open the preview from the design's page

On the design's page in the shop, look under the formats and info for the pink Try on Your Item box (on some font pages it says Try this Font on Your Item).

  • On a computer: scan the QR code with your phone's camera. If you want to try it on the computer's webcam instead, click Or click to open the link.
  • On a phone: tap the Try on Your Item button.

2. Start the camera

The preview opens with the design's name. Tap Start Camera. Your browser asks for camera access; tap Allow.

Nothing is recorded or uploaded. The camera picture stays on your phone.

3. Point at your item and place the design

Point the phone's back camera at your item. The design floats on top of the picture, a little see-through so you can see the fabric under it.

  • Move it: drag with one finger.
  • Make it bigger or smaller: pinch with two fingers, or drag the resize handle.
  • Turn it: twist with two fingers, or drag the rotate handle.

4. Try your own thread colors

Open Colors in the menu at the bottom. Every numbered circle is one color step of the design, in stitch order. Tap a circle, pick a color on the Pick a color wheel and tap Apply.

For fonts, changing a color changes that thread in every letter at once.

5. For fonts: type your own word

Open Text, type your word (up to 20 characters) and tap the pink arrow. If you want to nudge single letters, tap Fix letters and drag the letter.

Under Size you can choose the letter size (and the style, if the font has more than one). The list shows the sizes included in the font, for example 1.6" (52 letters). The sizes keep the right proportions to each other, but the picture is still not to scale.

6. Save a picture, then go back or add to cart

Tap the round pink button with the down arrow (bottom right) to save a photo of your item with the design on it. Use it to compare ideas or to ask someone's opinion.

Add to cart (top right) adds the design to your cart, or opens its page so you can pick the option you want. Back (top left) returns to the design's page.

If something looks wrong

  • "Camera access blocked": you said no to the camera once, so the browser won't ask again. The message shows how to allow it again for your phone. Allow the camera for the site, then reload the page.
  • "Camera in use": another app or tab is using the camera (a video call, the camera app, or this preview in a second tab). Close it and reload.
  • "No camera found": you're on a computer without a camera. Scan the QR code with your phone instead.
  • The design looks too big or too small for my item: that's expected. The camera can't measure your item, so the size on screen is only a guide. Pinch it to the size you like, then check the real size with Mockup or Smart Print.
  • The Size tab is empty for a design: pinch to change the size on screen. The real sizes of a design are listed on its page and in your Library (Will this design fit my hoop?).
  • "N char(s) missing in this font" or "No matching letters in this font/size": the font doesn't include those characters, at least not in that size. Try another size or leave the character out.
  • A different design shows up: that design is no longer available in the preview. Go back to the shop page and open the preview from the design you want.
  • The help (?) says the Save button is bottom left: it is the round pink button at the bottom right.
