Biker key case

Biker Key Case - ITH Machine Embroidery Design

Finished biker-style key case in the shape of a mitten with decorative embroidery.

Project Details

This design is available for the following embroidery hoop sizes:

  • 4x4 Hoop (makes a 4-inch key case)
  • 5x7 Hoop (makes a 4.5-inch key case - recommended)
  • 5x7 Hoop (makes a 5-inch key case)

Fabric Requirements

You will need two pieces of the main fabric. The key holder is constructed from two pieces that are folded in half, so each piece needs to be twice the height of the finished item.

4x4 Hoop 5 inches wide by 10 inches high
5x7 Hoop (Small) 6 inches wide by 12 inches high
5x7 Hoop (Large) 6 inches wide by 14 inches high

Embroidering Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Front

Hoop only the tear-away stabilizer.

Tear-away stabilizer secured in an embroidery hoop.

Place the first piece of main fabric and a layer of wading (optional) inside the hoop. The top half of the fabric should be inside the hoop, with the rest of the fabric hanging out from the bottom, as shown in the example image below.

Attach the hoop to the machine and stitch the decorative embroidery (Color 2).

Step 2: Prepare the Back

Take the second piece of fabric and fold it in half.

Place a layer of wading (optional) between the folded layers.

Wadding placed between the folded layers of the second fabric piece.

Place the folded fabric piece right inside the shape on top of your embroidered front piece.

It is helpful to use tape to ensure the fabric stays flat while stitching.

Fabric layers taped down to stay flat during stitching.

Sew the tack-down seam around the entire mitten shape (Color 3).

Step 3: Final Assembly

Pause the machine and fold the bottom half of the first piece of fabric up and over the project.

Folding the front piece of fabric up over the project.

It should look like this:

The front fabric piece correctly folded over the back piece.

It is important to leave approximately 1 inch of space between the top edge of the fabric you just folded up and the top seam, as shown in the image below. The folded edge should not go past the top of the pattern.

Stitch the final key holder outline seam (Color 4).

Step 4: Finishing

Unhoop the project and gently tear away the stabilizer.

Tearing away the excess stabilizer from the finished key case.

Cut out the shape. It is important to clip the curves, making cuts as close as possible to the seam. Be careful not to cut the thread!

Now it is time to turn the key holder right side out. This is a two-step process. First, turn it through the hole you left at the top.

Then, turn the rest of the project through the bottom opening.

Step 5: Prepare the Ribbon

Now it is time to prepare the ribbon. This is optional, as it may be replaced with any lace or satin ribbon.

To make the custom ribbon end, hoop a tear-away stabilizer. Stitch the embroidery, then stop the machine but do not unhoop the project. Place a piece of felt behind the hoop and stitch the final outline to create the feltie.

This is what the back of the hoop will look like:

This is what the front of the hoop will look like:

There will be a small hole designed in the upper part of the key holder to insert the ribbon.
