Project Overview

This project is completed in two or three separate hoopings:

  1. Prepare the crown (Optional).
  2. Prepare the ears.
  3. Stitch the face and attach the ears and crown.

Embroidering the Crown (Optional)

Important Note

You may need to pause the machine and take out the hoop, but do not unhoop your project! The backing is taped behind the hoop.

Instructions

Hoop only the tear-away stabilizer and attach the hoop to the machine.

Tear-away stabilizer secured in an embroidery hoop.

Embroider the placement outline directly onto the stabilizer. Stop the machine, but do not unhoop. Lay your fabric piece right inside the stitched shape.

Placing a piece of fabric over the crown placement stitch.

Use tape to ensure the fabric stays flat while stitching.

Next, stitch the tack-down outline. Please note, while my photo shows two crowns being made at once, your file will only contain one.

Take the hoop out of the machine, but do not unhoop the project.

Embroidery hoop removed from the machine.

Turn the hoop over to see the back and attach the lining fabric behind the hoop.

Lining fabric taped to the back of the hoop.

Ensure there is plenty of excess fabric around the perimeter. I am securing the lining with tape.

Return the hoop to the machine and sew the next outline seam, which tacks down both the front and back fabrics. After this seam, trim the excess fabric from both the front and back of the hoop, close to the stitch line.

Here is how the trimmed fabric looks from behind the hoop:

Attach the hoop back on the machine and continue with the design. The final step will be the satin stitch outline.

When the design has finished, remove the tape, unhoop, and gently tear away the stabilizer.

Embroidering the Ears

Hoop tear-away stabilizer with a piece of medium-weight cotton fabric that has been folded in half with right sides together.

Folded fabric placed in the hoop over stabilizer for the ears.

Sew the outline stitch. My apologies, my photo shows two sets of ears as I was making two bunnies at once!

When the design has finished, unhoop your project. Gently tear away the excess stabilizer and cut out the ear shapes.

Cut-out bunny ear shapes before turning.

Trim and clip the seam allowances, especially on the curved edges, to reduce bulk. Be careful not to cut the seam!

Turn the ears right side out. This may require some patience and skill.

Embroidering the Bunny Head on the Towel

Load the appropriate bunny head file for your hoop size.

First, stitch the bunny outline (Color 1) directly onto the tear-away stabilizer. Then, place the towel right inside the shape. Use tape or pins to make sure it stays flat while stitching.

Towel placed over the placement stitch on the stabilizer.

Navigate back to Color 1 on your machine and stitch it again to tack down the towel.

Towel tacked down with the first outline stitch.

Now it is time to use your prepared ears and crown. Lay them inside the shape as desired.

Placing the finished ears and crown onto the towel for attachment.

This is the most complicated step. Lay the pieces carefully and fix them in place with tape or pins. I am impatient and pinned them all at once.

You may go back to Color 1 and stitch it one more time to ensure the ears and crown stay securely in place during the next steps.

Lay the bunny face fabric right inside the shape and stitch the next outline (Color 2).

Face appliqué fabric placed over the ears and crown.

Continue embroidering as you would with a typical appliqué design. Trim the excess bunny face fabric, then continue stitching the remaining design colors (Colors 3-10).

When the design is complete, unhoop and gently tear away the stabilizer.

Congratulations! You are done!
