How to Create FSL Earrings with Fringe Details

Step 1: Prepare Your Materials
Use a water-soluble stabilizer (WSS), which is essential for creating lace designs. I recommend using a fabric-type WSS for this project. This type of stabilizer looks and feels like a soft fabric or interfacing and provides excellent stability for dense designs, especially FSL projects with fringed elements. Fabric-type WSS ensures the embroidery holds its shape during stitching and dissolves completely in water, leaving only the delicate lace behind.
Step 2: Hoop the Stabilizer
Hoop the water-soluble stabilizer tightly to prevent it from shifting during stitching. For extra stability, consider using two layers of WSS, especially if the design is dense or includes intricate fringe elements.
Step 3: Stitch the Design
Start stitching the FSL design. Pay attention to any areas with fringed elements, as these will have long satin stitches secured with small tie-off stitches.
Step 4: Trim the Fringes
Before removing the project from the hoop, flip it over to the back. Carefully trim the bobbin threads of the long satin stitches to create the fringe effect.
After trimming, gently fluff the fringe on the front with your fingers or the tip of your scissors to achieve the desired look.
Step 5: Remove and Rinse
Trim away any excess stabilizer from around the edges of the earrings before rinsing.
Step 6: Shape and Dry
While the lace is still damp, gently shape it if necessary. Lay it flat on a non-stick surface to dry completely.
Step 7: Attach Earring Findings
Use pliers to attach jump rings and earring hooks to the lace. Make sure the findings are secure and aligned properly.
Your FSL earrings are now ready to enjoy!
