Embroidering Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Front

Hoop only the tear-away stabilizer.

Tear-away stabilizer secured in an embroidery hoop.

Place the main fabric piece and a layer of wadding (if using) inside the hoop.

Main fabric and wadding placed inside the hoop.

Position the fabric so the top part is exactly in the hoop and the rest of the fabric extends out from the bottom for later use, as shown in the example image below.

Correctly positioning the long piece of front fabric in the hoop.

Step 2: Stitch the Decoration

Attach the hoop to the machine and stitch the decorative embroidery (Color 1).

Step 3: Add Ribbon and Backing

Attach the ribbon for the hanging loop.

Taping a folded ribbon loop onto the project.

Tape a folded piece of ribbon where indicated by the placement stitching, as shown in the photo below.

The ribbon loop taped securely in place on the oven mitt.

Take your second piece of fabric and fold it in half.

Place a layer of wadding between the folded layers (optional).

Lay the folded fabric piece right inside the stitched shape.

It is helpful to use tape to ensure the fabric stays flat while stitching.

The backing fabric taped securely in place.

Sew the entire mitten outline tack-down seam (Color 2).

Step 4: Final Assembly

Pause the machine and fold the open bottom side of the first fabric piece up and over the mitten.

It should look like this:

The front fabric piece correctly folded over the back piece.

It is important to fold the bottom edge of this fabric and iron it in place first, as shown in the image below.

The bottom edge of the fabric is folded and ironed to create a clean hem.

It is also important that the folded side does not go past the pattern on the upper part of the mitten. Leave at least a ½ inch (or 5mm) gap at the top.

You will now have a "sandwich" of layers, as shown in the image below.

All layers are now in place for the final outline stitch.

Return the hoop to the machine and stitch the whole mitten outline seam (Color 3).

Step 5: Finishing

Unhoop the project and gently tear away the stabilizer.

Cut out the shape.

It is important to make a cut between the thumb and the palm. Make the cut as close as possible to the seam in the corner. Be careful not to cut the thread!

Now it's time to turn the mitt right side out. This is a two-step process. First, turn the detail through the upper hole.

Optionally, you can sew the opening inside the mitten closed by hand at this point.
