How To Make

Felt Christmas Ornaments Tutorial

A finished felt Christmas ornament with an embroidered gingerbread man design.

Important Note

You may need to pause the machine and take the hoop out during this project, but please do not unhoop your work! The backing fabric is taped behind the hoop.

Stitching Instructions

Step 1: Preparation

Hoop only the tear-away stabilizer and attach the hoop to your machine.

Tear-away stabilizer secured in an embroidery hoop.

Embroider the first color step, which is the placement outline, directly onto the stabilizer.

Stop the machine, but do not unhoop your project. Lay a piece of felt right inside the stitched shape.

It is helpful to use tape to ensure the fabric stays flat while stitching. Continue stitching the main embroidery design.

Step 2: Final Assembly

When the design is almost finished, stop the machine before the final outline step. Take the hoop out of the machine, but do not unhoop the project.

Embroidery hoop removed from the machine before the final step.

Turn the hoop over to see the back side of the project.

Tape the hanging ribbon in place at the top of the ornament. An optional length is 3 inches, folded in half.

A folded ribbon for hanging is taped to the back of the ornament.

Next, attach the backing felt (lining) behind the hoop, covering the ribbon and the stitched area.

Please ensure there is plenty of excess fabric around the perimeter. I am securing the lining with tape.

Backing felt taped securely in place over the entire design area.

Return the hoop to the machine and stitch the final seam, which is the outline that will tack down the backing fabric.

Once stitching is complete, unhoop the project and carefully cut out the ornament along the final stitch line. Be careful not to cut the hanging ribbon!
