Split seams in short
How to Create Split Seams
Here are some tips on how to make split seams. I recommend trimming the t-shirt fabric before the embroidery finishes. This helps create clean edges and prevents the fabric from sticking out beyond the design. If you're using an appliqué-style technique, you can stop the machine after the placement and tack-down stitches, trim the excess fabric carefully, and then continue stitching.
I "float" the garment for these designs rather than hooping it, as this makes alignment much easier. Here’s a quick overview of the instructions to get you started:
- Optional: Use two layers of stabilizer for extra support. If your design includes freestanding lace edges, a water-soluble stabilizer is recommended for the decorative edging.
- Stitch the position outline onto the stabilizer to mark the placement.
- Place your garment over the outline and secure it with pins or tape.
- Stitch the tack-down seam to secure the fabric in place.
- Carefully cut along the marked line, close to the seam, to create the split opening.
- Stitch the final satin edge to give the design a polished finish. If the design includes appliqué steps, complete them as usual.
- Remove the excess stabilizer by trimming, tearing, or rinsing, depending on the type you used.
