How to Create Split Seams

Here are some tips on how to make split seams. I recommend trimming the t-shirt fabric before the embroidery finishes. This helps create clean edges and prevents the fabric from sticking out beyond the design. If you're using an appliqué-style technique, you can stop the machine after the placement and tack-down stitches, trim the excess fabric carefully, and then continue stitching.

I "float" the garment for these designs rather than hooping it, as this makes alignment much easier. Here’s a quick overview of the instructions to get you started:

  1. Optional: Use two layers of stabilizer for extra support. If your design includes freestanding lace edges, a water-soluble stabilizer is recommended for the decorative edging.
  2. Stitch the position outline onto the stabilizer to mark the placement.
  3. Place your garment over the outline and secure it with pins or tape.
  4. Stitch the tack-down seam to secure the fabric in place.
  5. Carefully cut along the marked line, close to the seam, to create the split opening.
  6. Stitch the final satin edge to give the design a polished finish. If the design includes appliqué steps, complete them as usual.
  7. Remove the excess stabilizer by trimming, tearing, or rinsing, depending on the type you used.
