In-the-Hoop Embroidered Coasters
In-the-Hoop Coaster Napkins Tutorial
This tutorial will guide you through creating in-the-hoop embroidered coaster napkins using easy techniques with either tear-away or water-soluble stabilizers. This beginner-friendly project provides flexibility with fabric choices and finishes, allowing for customizable, polished results.
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Step 1: Preparing the Stabilizer and Fabric
Hoop only the stabilizer, then place your fabric directly in the hoop. Many designs include an initial stitch to mark where the coaster will be embroidered. Stitch this outline onto the stabilizer, then lay your fabric down and secure it by running the same stitch again or by using the next stitch sequence in the design. If there is no initial placement stitch in the design, you can simply repeat the first stitch of the main outline twice.
-
Step 2: Trimming the Fabric
Stop the machine and carefully trim the fabric along the stitched outline. Cut as close to the seam as possible to achieve a clean, neat edge for your coaster. Using curved-tip scissors is recommended for precise trimming.
-
Step 3: Completing the Embroidery
After trimming, return the hoop to the machine and continue with the embroidery process. The final satin stitch will run around the edge, creating a polished, finished seam. Once the design is done, remove the tear-away stabilizer or rinse off the water-soluble stabilizer, depending on which you used.
-
Step 4: Fabric and Stabilizer Options
Recommended fabrics include medium-weight or thick cotton. You can also opt for lightweight cotton for more delicate cocktail napkins.
You can also try a second method by hooping the stabilizer and fabric together from the beginning, stitching the entire design, and then trimming around the edge at the very end. This method can work depending on the fabric, but the first approach is recommended for the best results.
-
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Your coaster is now ready! This project is simple and versatile, ideal for various fabric choices and occasions. Enjoy your handmade, in-the-hoop embroidered coasters!
